So this chapter begins on September 19th until they get kicked out of the Hollow. Uh, I'll try not to spoil it and stop talking now.
September 19th: Last Day
Minerva wrinkled her forehead. It was the last day of Pixie Hollow's existence, things should have been chaotic! Fireballs should have been raining from the sky, pixies should have been sobbing uncontrollably, and Neverland's inhabitants should have begun to age. Okay, maybe not quite so dramatic. But things should have been going wrong, yet everything looked normal, as if it were a normal day and pixies were going for a stroll in Havendish Square.
She glanced at her new tinkered timepiece on her wrist. It's almost time. Almost time for everything to end, all the memories, all the fun, all the laughter, everything she had worked for. Gone. As if it never happened at all.
"Ugh! This is NOT happening!" She groaned as the precious seconds ticked away. "I'll wake up and it will all be a dream."
And then it happened. The end. The last thing she remembered was calling for her bee, Rainstorm and bidding him farewell. And the darkness enveloped her; it was like nobody else was there, just her and the dark, swirling vortex. She couldn't quite explain where she was: in the air? Water? Definitely not dry land. No matter how hard she tried to find out exactly what happened after, the more her mind drew a blank. It was as if her memories had erased that particular moment.
----
Gentle waves lapped at the base of the rock as the sun blazed down overhead. Minerva shielded her eyes and stretched. It was like waking up from a year-long nap.
"Where am I?" She murmured.
"Why, in the middle of the Mermaid Lagoon, of course," said a voice on her right. The voice was melodic and soft, alluring.
"Who's there?"
"It's only me." The voice drew closer as she heard the sound of a tail flicking water. Wait a minute, a tail? It was...
The mermaid's voice was curious as she pondered, "You're from Pixie Hollow aren't you? I heard that something major happened."
"Well, yeah," Minerva squinted, somewhat suspicious since she had heard from Sil that mermaids were sly and selfish. She flapped her wings, thankfully, they were only somewhat damp.
"You're a water-talent, right?" The mermaid interrupted her thoughts of escape.
"Yes. How did you know?" Minerva glanced at the mermaid cooly. Her hair was long and dark brown in colour. Her aqua eyes glinted in the sunlight as she flicked her ultramarine tail.
"Your wings are tinted blue," she shrugged. "I'm Corine, by the way."
"Minerva."
"Nice to meet you. And might I add, you look dreadful! Whatever is wrong in Pixie Hollow must be a very big deal!"
Well, she was honest, at least. Corine dug out a shell mirror encrusted with pearls and held it in front of Minerva's body. Her once-straight, tame hair had become wild and hung down in long strands, the green in her eyes was beginning to lose their shimmer and her black and white outfit was matted and torn. At least she had been holding onto her Leaf Journal.
"Oh dear, things must have been awful! Why you're the only pixie out here is beyond me. At least they had sense to toss everyone else on the shore! At least you know a bit about water though, so it isn't as drastic.
Corine began to fuss over her, insisting that a new outfit must be changed into immediately. Minerva was confused; it wasn't like mermaids to fuss, at least, that's what she heard from Sil. The mermaids in the Grotto were grumpy and often spent most of their time underwater, avoiding the 'pesky' fairies. Not that she had anything against being fussed over, of course. She was merely unaccustomed to it. And even less with a mermaid of all of Neverland's creatures.
"Corine," Minerva began.
"Yes?"
"Why are you being so nice to me? I understand that mermaids and fairies don't get along well..."
Corine gazed off into the distance. "I don't agree with that," she replied quietly. "I've always wanted to fly. I know it's such a silly dream but I've always wished... We aren't that different. We're both from Neverland after all."
Minerva smiled. "Thank you," she said. An overwhelmingly long silence filled the air and she fought for something else to say. "Do you know where I am?"
"I told you already, in the middle of the Mermaid Lagoon. You might as well stay on this rock since there's no land for at least 50 miles either side."
"Oh," Minerva bit her bottom lip. Looks like there's no hope going back to the shore then. That meant the only hope was to survive on a rock. A rock in the middle of the Lagoon. With mermaids. Sure, Corine was nice enough, but that didn't mean all mermaids were nice. Well, better one choice than none. Her logical mind began to build a blueprint, perhaps some driftwood floors, and something sturdy to hold against waves..
"I'll help you build a home," Corine offered. "With driftwood, seaweed and some shells and pearls. It'll be like a palace."
"How can I refuse?"
Even though Pixie Hollow was gone and she had no idea where the other pixies were, Minerva had never felt more at home. Perhaps it was the beginning of a valuable friendship.
-----
I've always wanted Minerva to meet a mermaid or two. A nice mermaid. So that's where Corine comes in. So this fulfills a little desire of mine.. Where will this go, I wonder? Keep reading for more! :)
